Payatham Kootu

Preparation method for Payatham kootu is simple and is very tasty when cooked with care.

Ingredients :

Medium sized Onions – 2
Carrot -4
Moong dal/ Payatham parupu – 1 cup
Green chilli – 4
Mustard -1/4 spoon
Jeera – ¼ spoon
Red chilli (flat &long ) – 2
Oil – 2 spoons
Salt to taste.
coriander leaves.

Optional :
Urad dal/ Ulutham parupu – 2 spoons
Pepper – ¼ spoon
Grated coconut – ½ cup

Peel the skin of carrots ,. Slice carrots & onions to small pieces.
Split green chillies vertically and cut them half.

Cook carrot and moong dal in pressure cooker.

With one spoon of oil fry onions , add the cooked carrot in kadai.
Add water to cooked moong dal (payatham parupu) and make an even paste out of it.
Add the moong dal , Green chillies and salt to kadai
Stir and add water till the dal soaks fully.
Allow to boil , Payatham kootu is ready.

Fry mustard , Jeera, Red chillies and grated coconut in 1 spoon of oil and add it to the kadai.
Garnish with coriander leaves .
Serve hot.

Optional :
1) Squeeze few drops of lemon on the cooked dal before serving.
2) Deep Fry urad dal, pepper and make a paste out of it .
  Add it along with moong dal paste in kadai. This gives a unique flavour to the dish :) 

Tips : It tastes good with rice & chapathi . 
Instead of carrot, we can use cabbage, beans,brinjal(fry with oil first),palak too.
